The advantages of packaging wine in baginbox

You may be used to wine in dark glass bottles and cork stoppers, and the bag in box format conveys to you that it is a poor quality wine, for teenagers and that it is bought because it is cheap.

But the reality is that this is changing. Boxed wine, or bag in box, has come to stay, and one of the main reasons is its environmental and economic benefits.

And it is that despite the fact that it has existed for many years, the wine in baginbox has been underestimated. But, as with so many aspects of contemporary culture, what was once old and tacky is now current and modern. And it is that it is a container that fits much better than traditional containers with such important concepts of the 21st century as sustainability and environmental impact. Here are some of the advantages:

1. Lower energy costs compared to bottles

One of the main reasons for this trend is the environmental and economic benefits of producing, transporting, storing and consuming wine from a bag in box.

Although glass is recyclable, it also requires a lot of energy to produce; instead, plastic and cardboard require much less energy to produce.

2. Lower carbon dioxide emissions in transport

Glass bottles are heavy and cost a lot per milliliter to transport. Transporting a heavy material like glass is not only more costly in financial terms, it is also more costly for the environment.

According to an article in the New York Times, the comparison is as follows:

“A standard glass wine bottle contains 750 milliliters of wine and generates about 5.2 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions when it travels from a vineyard in California to a store in New York. A 3 liter boxinbox generates approximately half the emissions per 750 millilitres. Switching to boxed wine for 97 percent of wines that are made to be consumed within a year would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately two million tons, or the equivalent of retiring 400,000 cars.”

3. Less oxidation means longer life

The hermetic seal between the tap and the bag means that bag in box wine can be stored for weeks, once opened, without affecting the flavor, whereas wine from a bottle should ideally be consumed within hours or days. .

4. Bag-in-box wine is cheaper

When it comes to packaging, glass is significantly more expensive to use than a box. This price is attributed to the final product, so the person who ends up paying it is the consumer.
